Primary Years

Good Shepherd Lutheran College has three Junior Schools, offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. This student-centred approach to education encourages children to take ownership of their learning to increase their confidence and self-motivation, and collaborate with teachers and peers to deepen their understanding.

Specialist Subjects

Christian Studies

Christian Studies is an integral part of our curriculum and develops an understanding of Christian beliefs and values within students.

Our College Chaplain holds weekly chapel services at each campus and provides continued pastoral support across the Junior Schools.

Physical EducationStudents are taught the importance of a healthy lifestyle, physical activity and wellbeing. Age-appropriate activities refine gross motor skills and encourage a passion for sport and activity.
Languages

At Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Leanyer and Palmerston students learn French, while Howard Springs Junior students learn German.

Studying languages challenges students to become global citizens with respect for all cultures.

Visual ArtStudents are involved in a range of artistic disciplines including drawing, painting, ceramics, printing, computer graphics and animation. Student artwork is celebrated through College publications and events, and displayed at local shows where our students regularly receive individual and group awards.
MusicMusic is taught to all students from Transition to Year 5. Students are encouraged to sing and/or play musical instruments.

Beyond the classroom

Our Junior campuses are a hive of activity, and students participate in regular extra-curricular activities focussed on wellbeing and community. Activities like the annual swimming carnival and camps are combined across all junior schools, fostering meaningful relationships.

  • Athletics and swimming carnivals
  • Swimming lessons
  • External workshops (sports and dance)
  • Leadership opportunities (Junior School and House Captains, SRC)
  • Wellbeing days (animal encounters, face painting, water play and much more)
  • Colour fun runs
  • Outdoor Education program – ‘stay ups’ and ‘sleepovers’ in junior years, camps from Year 4.
  • Top End Region Interschool Sport (TERIS)
  • College choir
  • Instrumental music tuition
