NAIDOC Week Celebrations
This year NAIDOC week falls over school holidays, so students at Howard Springs Junior school celebrated early in their final week of term.
We welcomed back Richard Fejo at a whole school assembly. Richard is a Larrakia (Darwin) and Warramungu (Tennant Creek) man, and current Elder on Campus at Flinders University in Darwin. Through his community engagement work, Richard has visited Good Shepherd Lutheran College many times, and we were thrilled to have him back as part of NAIDOC week celebrations.
At assembly, Richard welcomed us all to country and spoke of the importance of NAIDOC week and reconciliation. Students were then given time to reflect on this as they broke off into class groups and formed yarning circles to discuss.
While other classes continued with their own art activities, students from each year level enjoyed an art class with Richard, where they painted Australian animals in tradition Indigenous colours and styles.
A huge thank you to Richard Fejo for visiting!
