Mathematics
Learning within Mathematics promotes a powerful universal language, analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills that contribute to the development of logical, abstract and critical thinking. Mathematics helps learners at Good Shepherd Lutheran College make sense of the world, as it promotes careful analysis as learners search for patterns and relationships. The very nature of Mathematics promotes both inquiry and application, helping learners develop problem-solving techniques that transcends Mathematics and that are useful outside of the school setting.
Within the MYP at Good Shepherd Lutheran College the study of Mathematics is more than simply learning formulae or rules. Through inquiry-based learning experiences set within real-world, relevant contexts, learners come to understand that the answers to Mathematics cannot be found in the back of a textbook, but rather that they can be active participants in the search for answers, concepts and relationships. Through this approach to the teaching of Mathematics, learners begin to view Mathematics as a learning area that comes alive with the thrill of exploration and discovery.
